Winter Wonderland!
I must have been a good boy this year, because today Santa pretty much gave me everything I wanted! I even got a top 20 from So Yeon. She has never finished worse than 25th in 11 tries at this event. Unreal. This tournament kicked into high fricking gear on the back nine, when the Sisters looked around, said 'Hey, we can win this!' and started raising hell. How clutch was Inbee coming down the stretch? OK, she bogied the last, but still another top ten in a Major, and she has inched ahead of Sei Young in the POY race. She also tied (with Betsy King and Beth Daniel) for the most under par rounds in US Women's Open history: 24. By the way, who won the Annika award? Sei Young? Popov and Kim aren't even LPGAers, and Mirim has missed most of the season. Then Hot Six started making great shots. I was sure they wouldn't even show her, and she ended up with a top ten herself. Alas, not quite enough to make the CME, but a valiant way to end her season and a great defense. But the best was yet to come. Jin Young was on the prowl, and man, it was GREAT seeing her in full flight. They don't give her a sponsor's invite to CME? So what, she just kicked down the door. Great game, 68, and the styling earmuffs to boot. I'll admit I was rooting like heck for Jin Young to get the trophy, but A Lim was fantastic, too. How often does someone end this tournament with three straight birdies to clinch the win? Yes, they didn't end up figuring out how to pronounce her name before they gave her the trophy, like I had hoped the other day, but she still got the trophy anyways, and an added soaking by Lee6 as well! Be very afraid. In all other cases where a KLPGAer won a Major, that gal was either the top player on that tour or second or third. Kim wasn't even top ten. In fact, she was the lowest ranked player to win this event since the Rolex Rankings started: 94th. Fantastic day, and a worthy champion! Congrats to Ahhhhh Lim Kim! Hwaiting!

Don't worry, there'll be plenty of next years! The motto is "Fail early, fail fast" which is the best way to learn!

SoYeonFan Thanks, it's great that we share the same opinion. Yealimi was due for a bad round, and that's compounded today by a severe weather and course condition. Now she's done it at the biggest stage; she won't be scared of shooting 80 in the future.

Incredible! This is why I am a member of this board. Year after year, some Seoul Sisters comes to the fore at a major to take it all. You can never tell who or how it will affect her career, but it happens again and again. This time it is Kim A Lim's turn. What a finish she had. She was inspired by Ji Yeong Kim2's feat that made the cut and birdied the last three holes to top Ko, Olson and Shibuno. Congratulations!
Ariya makes me tear my hair out and I haven't cut mine in nine months. She can be so precise on one hole and be a complete duffer on the next.
So Brandel praised SYK's swing? Odd. On a pre-round show, he kept calling her "Sei Young Park".
Even though they had to play in the freezing cold because of the pandemic, I got to watch it all at home.

I dropped by my parents' place tonight in blackout mode ... put on GC and a replay was already running with the last group playing #11. Dan Hicks had one useful comment (where there any others?) - American League Kim's win was like Charl Schwartz running the table with four finishing birdies to win the 2011 Masters. Hicks' batting average was low for this event, but it still puts him ahead of Mush Mouth Mac, who commented on Dr. Noh's lousy day with the term "perseverance", which is fine, except that she preceded that word with convoluted gobbledegook. Is she paid by the syllable?
HappyFan, you need to get some representation and hire yourself out on consulting gigs. These guys like Hicks and Bones parachute into one or two big women's events per year and know precious little about women's golf and even less about the Asians. At a minimum, you could have cleaned up those embarrassing pronunciation gaffes within the first 30 minutes of Thursday's broadcast. Even worse, they short-changed A.L. Kim's accomplishments as she made her late run. They mentioned how she had top-10s in her last four KLPGA events ... which is okay, but did anyone actually mention that she has WON on the KLPGA at least twice?! Or that she lead the KLPGA in driving distance the last three years?
... and now a complaint about the winner ... and it saddens me because she has been the most joyous player I have ever seen on the KLPGA ... TAKE OFF THAT STUPID-AZZ MASK!!! You're walking in hundreds of acres of open air space from one shot to another. If you're required to put the mask on in the scorer's tent, that's fine, who cares about that. But, wearing a mask when you're playing is b******t.
Btw, did Mama Jutanugarn pay off the broadcasters to play up her girls as much as possible? Did I miss some important stuff during the first ten holes? "Moriya makes another par-saver putt to stay within four shots of the lead." Huh?! Are we supposed to ooh and ah over that? She had NO chance to win today. Meanwhile, Ariya51 putted like she was wearing hockey gloves, and you can throw in that approach shot that traveled about six feet off the ground and hooked into the rough. I haven't watched her in a while ... has she still given up on using a driver? I assume she was trying to win with 12 clubs today, which is a hopeless task.
I knew the broadcasters were going to say it today ... in fact, the same dreadful thought crossed my mind a couple of days earlier: Papp is The New Pouty
What a superb and unexpected performance ... excluding Shibuno, she whupped the rest of Team Japan

I am glad that I decided to watch SBS Golf Stream2. They showed the entire round, where as the Golf Chanel only showed nine holes. Maybe their Golf Stream showed it all but I don't get it in this area.

It was funny to hear people speculate on how the ROK stars got sponsors names on their parkas so fast.
This isn't the minor leagues, people. They all came prepared.

The NY Times take... www.nytimes.com/2020/12/14/sports/golf/us-womens-open-winner-a-lim-kim.htmlThe United States Golf Association embraced the hashtag #WomenWorthWatching and a few players from the PGA Tour followed suit, much to the bemusement of the current generation of Asian L.P.G.A. stars who have never lacked for attention at home. That Monday’s final round was televised live in South Korea in the middle of the night says a lot about the popularity of women’s golf in a country where the best female golfers are more popular than the men who play on the PGA Tour.
“Yeah, in Korea we get definitely a lot of attention and maybe we don’t need that phrase,” said Park, 32, a former world No. 1 whose final-round 68 vaulted her into a three-way tie for sixth at two-over 286.
Kim, who is not a member of the L.P.G.A., earned $1 million for the victory. She also is eligible for a two-year tour membership, but said she is not sure if she will join in 2021. The decision would likely require several major disruptions to her life.
“I just need some more time to think about it,” Kim said.Golf looked like the easy part for Kim, who took several deep breaths during her news conference to calm herself. “Once I go back home,” she said, “I’ll think about it and see.”

Or that she lead the KLPGA in driving distance the last three years? LOL thanks! I think what it really shows is how much golf commentating is crying out for a little diversity. I mean, look at the top ten on the leaderboard last week; all but two were Asian or of Asian ethnicity, but every last one of the GC crew is white (and mostly American). They should really try to find an Asian commentator (preferably Korean or Korean American just based on the numbers if nothing else, and it would be really nice if she were a former player). Of course, such a commentator also needs to be willing to shame the others publicly when they mispronounce names and whatnot.

If added, an Asian commentator would surely enhance the overall broadcast package, for fans and ironically non-fans alike, by contributing to a more international vibe which I believe would ultimately make the sport seem more current and competitive and therefore more significant. But the golf-on-tv people seem to be going in the opposite direction, downsizing and moving in with their parent company's studio. Word is they are even laying off the popular "GC Tiger Tracker" twitter account.

The way to save the LPGA is with either a US vs Korean team event or a mixed doubles tour event.

Karen Crouse seems like a hardcore but old school LPGA fan, perhaps the last one living. She is so hardcore that she can still feign interest in the Korean players, and do it pretty convincingly. In this article she makes an astute (for a westerner) assessment of the current state of women's golf: the USGA has been reduced to begging and pleading with the public to pay attention whereas the top players in Korea, Japan, Thailand are admired, celebrated, their stories told in major motion pictures etc. Also it sounds like A Lim is probably not coming to the LPGA. Obvious decision at this point. I'm assuming the LPGA still has a larger purse, but by how much, and for how much longer? Besides that, life on the KLPGA seems like way more fun. The LPGA is losing status every day and the pandemic only made things worse. Hana Jang's decision to leave was both prescient and a sign of the times.

Apparently they are giving A Lim just *one week* to decide if she wants to play on the LPGA in 2021, mainly because this event happened so much later than it usually does.
Personally, I think they should give her an option to play in 2022, because getting out of sponsor and KLPGA tour commitments in one week is not an easy thing to do.
