This new one runs Jan. 23-26 and the LPGA posted a field of 103 with five openings left ... two of which will come from the Jan. 20 qualifier where 61 players have already piled in.
Yui Kawamoto prepping for the qualifier.

This tournament is a godsend for Top-10 Q-Series qualifiers; they no longer need to travel all the way to Australia to start their season.
Top finisher Muni He, priority #126, needs 23 higher seed players to skip the event; not to worry.
In all eight Q-Series qualifiers, up to Albane Valenzuela #135; got automatic entries.
The message to future Q-Series qualifiers: "Don't be fooled by Top-45 and ties, go for Top-10."

Yes it's going to be really hard for Q-Series thirty and above qualifiers to get in tournaments. They are holding a spot for the Diamond Resort winner. I would think that everyone in that tournament already qualifies for this one.

Yui caught a break as she got into the tournament without qualifying ... will use a local caddy this week.
Meanwhile, darkness suspended the qualifier, which will have a playoff Tuesday for the 2nd spot:
Pos Player Name Nat. Par Score 1 Alison Lee (USA) USA -4 68 2 Jiwon Jeon (KOR) KOR -3 69 2 Kendall Dye (USA) USA -3 69 2 So Young Jang (KOR) KOR -3 69

I thought that I saw Muni He name listed earlier on the final field list. Maybe she dropped out, Yui Kawamoto were also listed in the Final Field last week. Yui will get an early start on practicing her Rookie of The Year speech.

Kendall Dye won the playoff for the second spot. Jang and Jeon are out. Natalie Gulbis and Madison Pressel are the sponsor invitations. Phil, FYI my field rating is 58%.

They have been replaced by Lauren Kim and Yui Kawamoto. Strangely, Muni is not playing next week either.

During the last tournament they put up some interesting statistics for the last ten years. In that time nobody has won more than Inbee, and nobody has shown up to more events than Chella.

Lucky for me, I saw Fassi in her prime .... at the Lancaster driving range, 2015.
********
Mi Hyang went Mavrik ... as usual, she switches to latest and greatest Cally driver (so they say).
On the other hand, Gaby won't buy TM's Kool-Aid and has been using an "obsolete" M2 driver since mid-2018 ... with excellent results.
Yui has 50.1K IG followers now .... let's see what it is at the end of Sunday's round.

GC's streaming bonus coverage perversely showed nearly every shot of Fassi's quad bogey on 15. After hitting two successive shots out of bounds, her next shot was at least in the general direction of the hole. Tom's one-word play-by-play comment: "Better."
The hole could have been worse. After finally making it onto the green, she one-putted from 20 feet.

Great first round for Yui Kawamoto to play herself onto the broadcast. First time in a long time to see Jessica Korda atop the Leaderboard. She used to be the first round queen. Inbee Park and In Gee Chun really needs to figure how to increase their driving distance. They both averaged around one hundred twenty five yards off the tee. They were also dead last in driving distance last tournament. That puts a lot of pressure on the rest of their game, scoring wise. Even short driving Chella Choi was in the one hundred thirties average.
