The NYT must have seen us mocking their easy LPGA crossword clues. They're getting more obscure. Today's puzzle... Clue (58A): Golfer Carol who won the 1965 US Womens Open Answer: MANN I'm no women's golf historian. I needed a couple of the cross-clues to get it.
I can buy that.
It was the second of three USWOs played at Atlantic City CC ... the others were in 1948 & 1975. Unfortunately, I don't think the USGA will ever go there again as they probably look at AC as an established LPGA market, which would diminish the grandeur of a USWO just a few miles away from the Seaview.

This clue caused a bit of a dust-up in the NYT Crossword forum, and sent several members to Wikipedia and the NYT archives to see who she was and if that clue was ever used before. It hasn't. But the word MANN has appeared as an answer over 200 times since the NYT puzzle began in 1942...but using different (i.e. easier) clues. A couple sample p'ed-off forum posts:

Suzuka Yamaguchi teed it up with the PGA Tour's Satoshi Kodaira this month at an event run by Palmax, a Japanese grip brand ... Yui Kawamoto and Phoebe Yao also use these grips.
The 2020 season can only be an improvement for SY ... in 2019 she was 39th in driving distance and 13th in putts per GIR ... but, it was everything else in between that was the problem. She does not lack in support or opportunities to get better ... in late November, signed an endorsement deal with GolfNet TV, an online golf platform in Japan.
She also got to practice at the IMG Academy in Florida in September, plus attend ESL classes (English as Second Language). It was a productive visit, per Google mush in an article regarding the GolfNet TV signing:
"While doing swing analysis at the IMG Academy, I noticed that the face direction at the address was closed without knowing it, and it improved after I was able to correct it. We will not make any major swing modifications, but we will aim for a more accurate swing."

Is there a significant gear change in the works for MHL? I don't know about her woods, but she has been fitted by MFS Golf with Matrix Ozik shafts in her irons for as long as I can remember. However, I think she went to someone new this month who supplies AutoPower shafts, which I never heard of before. The IG post below shows her testing AutoPower shafts with her driver .... not sure if she's changing her irons as the one iron swing in the collection below seems to have her usual Matriz Ozik shaft:
A few still pix from MHL's fitting session ... check out the last two - they put the AutoPower shaft into the legendary relic TaylorMade R1 driver!!! Why?
He also has the original brick s@&$house, Soobin Kim:

Yul Lin Hwang is a KLPGA golfer. She's decent; she's never won an event, but she easily maintains her tour card every year. She just might make an appearance in my year-in-review blog post coming soon (plug! plug!). Here's Yul Lin from last October: And August
