We're now less than a year out from the start of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad. I start this thread today because the PGA Tour released its schedule for the 2019/20 wraparound season, which includes a one week break for the week of the men's competition in Tokyo. Before we move on, a related note on this: TPC Boston in Norton, which is not part of the upcoming Playoffs, will begin a biennial rotation with greater New York as host of the Northern Trust championship with the 2020 edition.
The qualification criteria hasn't changed and can be found here. Since Japan is the host country this time around they'll have no problem qualifying players in the conventional fashion rather than relying on the host country exemption as Brazil did 3 years ago. Back to the new PGA Tour schedule, one of their fall series events will be contested in Japan, so potential male Olympic aspirants outside of Asia can get a sense of the conditions. The event replaces the Malaysia stop as the new government there is now fully out of the business of subsidizing golf tournaments as their former prime minister faces corruption charges.
The Olympics regards Great Britain as one country rather than four as is tradition in golf, but athletes from Northern Ireland have a choice as to whether they wish to represent Great Britain or Ireland, and both Rory McIlroy and Stephanie Meadow have chosen to march behind the orange, green and white tricolor of the Republic. Another oddity you'll notice as you scroll through the men's standings is that South African-born Rory Sabbatini is listed as Slovakian, the nationality of his wife and stepson. His wife's cousin is vice president of the Slovak Golf Federation. Although Rory said that his decision has more to do with growing the game in the country rather than representing it in Tokyo, his current world ranking would have made it all but impossible to represent his homeland.
And now what you're really here to see: the current Korean, American and other female qualifiers for 2020.
