Because I'm overflowing with the milk of human kindness, I am going to do the legwork for the American golf media and tip them off to a great player who will very soon be making huge noise in the West. If anyone who writes for a major golf publication, or appears regularly on Golf Channel, is reading this, please take note and spread the word!
Hopefully in the next year or so, I will not have to hear any real golf journalist say 'I first became aware of her at the 2020 Olympics where she won the gold medal', because they will be well aware of her thanks to me.
HYE JIN CHOI!
Sorry, I jumped ahead. But yes, I'm talking about Hye Jin Choi. Get your think pieces ready, and just for once, American golf media, profile an obvious superstar before she hits our shores like a category 5 hurricane. Fassi is passe! Van Dam is a sham! Think: 'Oh boy, it's Choi!'.
If you know her at all, you know her as the 17-year-old girl who nearly won the US Women's Open in 2017. Amazingly, she has gotten almost no press over here since then. But she hasn't gone away. She won two KLPGA events as an amateur, then turned pro and joined that tour in 2018. That year, she won twice more and won the Player and Rookie of the Year, despite duking it out with this year's US Women's Open winner Jeongeun Lee 6.
This year she's gotten better: she now leads all KLPGA stats categories, has won four times including a Major, and in just 1.5 years as a pro has 8 career KLPGA wins. That's nearly as many as Sung Hyun Park and So Yeon Ryu in their entire careers!
She is long off the tee, consistent, and has literally no flaws in her game. A slump for her is two - three events outside the top ten.
Once in a generation talent? Look no further than 'The Penguin', Hye Jin Choi. You're welcome!
