Nicole Jeray and a few others made it here as teaching pros...they have "CP" next to their names on the leaderboard. They're copying the guys who have teaching pros in the PGA Championship.

Screaming Eagle, aka Jimin Kang, is also here as one of tbe top finishers from the most recent LPGA T&CP Championship.Kevin

Nice interview with DK...how did the reporter know about the tarantula? A: I reported it here two years ago at a ShopRite pro-am.

6. Karen Crouse from the NY Times went there and asked the Haney question. 6 successfully deflected it. The local reporter tried to get her impressions of Hazeltine but "Sorry, I never heard of it."

Crouse's question to JEL 6 about Haney's comments possibly causing more fans to follow Lucky 6 at the USWO was technically reasonable...sort of like beating a dead horse with a feather duster. Nevertheless, she may discover than learning better English has its pitfalls...she didn't know what Crusty Grrr was yacking about during Round 4 of the 2017 USWO, which was probably a blessing.
Strange questions to the players about Minnesota...as if they were visiting one of Saturn's moons. Will Jesse Ventura or the MyPillow guy present the championship trophy? Is anyone here going to this one? Hey canlinny, it's just across the border from Cheesehead Nation.
Everyone is bowing down to the greatness of Hazeltine...the current version of it. However, it is fun to read the comments when this layout was a total bow-wow during its first 15-20 years of existence...kind of embarrassing that Rees Jones came in to fix the wreck his daddy (Robert Trent Jones Sr.) set up. Dave Hill's wisecracks during the 1970 USO are legendary, but the women had some choice observations during the 1977 USWO:
Excerpt:
"When I played here in 1977, the 16th hole was a bad par-three and 17 was a worse par-four," Stacy grinned. "I remember on 16 I hit a two-iron in there. No one is carrying a two-iron any more! That hole was too hard! And on 17, I remember there was very little landing area and you had to lay up with like a three-iron and then hit like a nine-iron up there.
Excerpt:
"The second hole is a broken leg," complained one pro. "The 16th is the world's only dogleg par-3," mumbled another. "Nicklaus can make birdie on 17, and so could I if I could hit a 160-yard nine-iron," groused a third. Even Judy Rankin, the LPGA's second-leading money winner with $90,248 this year, criticized the conditions. "There are a couple of places where if this course were a highway, you might have a wreck," she said. And, when only two players broke par during the first three rounds, there was that annual Open lament, "When the men shoot high scores, everybody thinks the course is tough. When we do it, we're inferior."
BTW, "inspiring greatness" was not the motto back then...from the same S.I. article:
As it was, the USGA's Frank Hannigan said of the women pros, "They think low scores in the agate type on Monday morning is most important. I happen to think that the best thing that can happen to them is for Laura Baugh to win in a halter, even if she shoots 300."

Hazeltine works well for big events. There is a ton of space to accommodate parking and grandstands around the driving range, first tee and 9/18 greens. It’s also not a social club, they are all serious golfers and get into hosting. They happily played off mats for a month or so ahead of the Ryder cup to insure pristine fairways.
There is a place for a home-run derby course for brawny bashers in their athletic and corporate prime. Better they are all in the same place. It’s also exceptionally well maintained (talent + $$$).
I’m not sure how fair the criticism was when it opened. Perhaps it was a shock to play a new course that wasn’t clogged with trees. If they played it as it opened in 2019 it might be received differently. I’ve never really seen the old 16th and 17th holes. I think I recall a quote by the architect about the criticism of 17 being along the lines of “hit the bleeping fairway, you’re a pro.”
Overall the frozen north is very fortunate to have Hazeltine to draw big events. The PGA and USGA can make a buck going there, too. There are a few other courses in MN that would be incredible to see an LPGA event at someday though.

I can't believe that event stopped in 1998 given the popularity of women's golf among Hank and his 4 cap white belt pupils at the time.
