BTW minami's last name "Katsu" in japanese translates to "to win / Winner" in english... So chicken katsu = winner's chicken?

happyfan: in the context of food "katsu" translates to "cutlet" "katsu" in its verb form is "to win", i'm no linguistic expert (i studied science in school)... all i can say is that occasionaly on her instagram posts you will see minami katsu refered to as "win-chan".
for this tounament japan has added another player to LPGA in rookie suzuka yamaguchi, so if i count correctly there are 5 players from japan and also mina harigae from the usa makes six. i also noticed that a junior golfer lacey uchida from hawaii was in the qualifer for this lotte, along with brittany yada and kacey komoto.
the name that i was expecting to see for this tournament but have not seen is stephanie kono (who is from hawaii and passed lpga q-school).

18yr old Suzuka Yamaguchi was in the first group to tee off today and just finished her round at -5 and currently T5...she birdied every par3 hole and had one bogey and is off to a terrific start.
btw she played the USWO in 2015 at the age of 14, in 2017 she won the austrailia womens amateur and last year won another amateur event in austrailia.
she may be a Nasa clone...

Heck, Yamaguchi's group shot 12 under.
I guess we can stop worrying about So Yeon Ryu.

i think Ko Olina plays very different with and without the trade winds... if i remember right the trade winds usually arrive in the afternoon...
the other young japan phenom Minami Katsu was one of the last to tee off and is currently -3 after 9 holes.

Lousy start for Georgia Hall (74) ... the good news is that she'll play Japan's Salonpas major May 9-12, which might give her some new candidates to fill the "vacant rental space." KLPGAer Ji Hyun Oh is also playing at Salonpas.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwYSb1nnmtF Good start for So Yeon with mixed feelings about the round. Still not driving and hitting greens like she used to do. She had twenty six putts, so her missed greens could have just been on the fringes. Jin Young played tee to green great as usual. Her putts were just missing the hole, so they weren't bad at all. This pitch and putt course is just what Hye Jin Choi needed to revive her game. In Gee had a good start as well. Jeongeun Lee6 needs to go really low today, at plus three first round.

Round 1 When was the last time both In Gee and So Yeon played this well in the same round? In Gee even averaged 290+ in driving distance on the front nine! Who knows what will happen Thursday, but I'll take my celebrations when I can! Alas, Lucky 6 had an atrocious first day, but even in her case, she was under par on the back and really just struggled on the front. She has a habit of getting out to slow starts, but she'll need to really play well on day two to make up for this... Great day for Eun Hee as well, obviously. Inbee needs to pick up the pace. Sei Young was at 7 under before she slipped up a little. Sisters hwaiting! In Gee Eun Hee Ji So Yeon Ryu Jin Young Ko's first round as #1 in the world was decent -- 69! Inbee Park Sei Young Kim Cecilia Cho Jeong Eun Lee 6 Mi Hyang Lee Na Yeon Choi Ji Hyun Kim Jenny Shin

Mi Hyang opened with a double in Round Two, now T-122 thru six holes.
*********
Karen Chung opened with two pars in Round Two, now T-16. Hugel is reserving two spots for players who get top-10s in this event.

Who is Karen Chung and why do people care.
I don't know if these are rhetorical questions. As of this moment, she is tied for 2nd among Americans on the leaderboard during the 2nd round, which is newsworthy. Plus, it's rare to find a New Jersey-bred touring pro who is really good.
I never saw her play at USC (maybe SoYeonFan did?), but I saw her twice last year: the Symetra Tour and a USWO qualifier. She has a helluva lot of firepower, but with an occasional tendency to gag. At Valley Forge, I was able to compare her with her well-known Trojan teammate Muni He...LUV Muni, but no contest, KC could beat her one-on-one 7 times out of 10...like this week.

MHL practice on Monday ... her T-60 position should be good enough to make the cut again.

Yesterday GC extended their coverage a half-hour until the completion of Nelly's round. Today -- with Eun-Hee Ji breathing down Nelly's neck and poised to surpass her -- "our broadcast window has come to a close."
