The pride of Dorchester, MA, Donnie Wahlberg, giving a silent shoutout to the current boyband sensation.
I'll be in the 3rd deck at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for BTS' 2nd show on Sunday 19 May.

If they are good and have some hits I don't see why not.

If a K-Pop band has only Japanese singers, do they still make them sing in Korean? Something weird about that. And if they don't, how is it a K-Pop band anymore?

If a K-Pop band has only Japanese singers, do they still make them sing in Korean? Something weird about that. And if they don't, how is it a K-Pop band anymore? My response: if a label utilizes the rigorous trainee system perfected in Korea, even if said agency were to be based outside of Korea, then it's still K-pop, because the term has become a brand as much as a genre. In such instances it may be called "________ K-pop" (the blank representing the nation producing the specific artist), so in your case it may be known as "Japanese K-pop", as historically ironic as that particular term sounds.
Moving slightly off topic but still dealing with popular music in Korea, hip-hop/R&B artist and Edmonds, WA native Jay Park is featured in a YouTube Originals four part series Jay Park: Chosen 1. As it followed him on a promotional run last year for his first release as a Roc Nation artist the series also details the path he took to get to this point.
While still at Edmonds High School he was part of a b-boy dance troupe called Art of Movement, or AOM. He went to a talent show that was a vehicle for Korean agencies to scout talent, was eventually signed by JYP Entertainment and after extensive training debuted as a member of the boy group 2PM. After a couple of years a social media posting from his trainee days detailing his frustrations about life in Korea surfaced, creating a media storm which prompted him to not just leave 2PM and JYP but Korea altogether. After some self reflection he posts a cover video on YouTube showing off what he feels is his true vocal talent, which was largely masked while with 2PM, and returns to Korea to debut as a solo artist performing mostly hip-hop and R&B. He eventually founded AOMG, bringing together like minded artists in Korea, followed by H1gher Music based in Seattle. Where his current trajectory takes him is anyone's guess.

Big week for us in NYC evidently. We got Tiger at Bethpage, and BTS in Central Park. Pretty big deal, mainstream media is all over it. I am still bewildered by the popularity. Musically KPOP has not exactly advanced the art form. It consistently sounds like cheap processed garbage music. Max Martin and NSYNC are George Martin and the Beatles in comparison.

The PGA does not need any more pub. Why weren't they supporting the women at the US Women's Open? Seriously, just a couple of tweets from K-Pop stars supporting Korean lady golfers would do wonders for the Sisters in the States. Get on the stick!

Seriously, just a couple of tweets from K-Pop stars supporting Korean lady golfers would do wonders for the Sisters in the States. Get on the stick! Agreed. I have to wonder why their schedules (they're currently filming the second season of their reality TV show) didn't allow for them to attend the Mediheal since that was in their hometown of San Francisco, but a big event in their backyard was probably too good an opportunity for their producers to pass up.Kevin

Well, it has FINALLY happened: an advert during an LPGA telecast featuring a K-pop act. That Mediheal's spot would star the hottest act on the planet, BTS, should surprise no one.
The subtitled version has been airing this week, but this video (in Korean) is a behind the scenes look into its production:

You're hearing it here first: I predict that the fervor behind the boy group EXO will wane considerably. It isn't just because BTS, the hottest group not just in K-pop but on the freaking planet, are eating their proverbial lunch at the moment, nor is it because members Xiumin and D.O. have within the past several weeks become the first of the nine remaining members to begin fulfilling their mandatory military service.
No, the reason would be because Ivanka Trump has come out as a fan of this group. Uh-oh.
The First Daughter first became acquainted with the group during last year's Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, where she witnessed their performance during the closing ceremony as head of the US delegation. At a state dinner at the Blue House this past Saturday she received an autographed album from the boys and introduced them to her dad.

The proliferation of K-pop acts scheduling tours of North America this year has been impressive, and some of them are even coming to Boston! The latest to post dates is the girl group (G)-Idle, joining former (f)x member Amber Liu as well as soloist (and Boston College alum) Eric Nam, Monsta X, Ateez, Stray Kids, Seventeen, Itzy, VAV, Day6 and of course BTS.
Speaking of the world's hottest boy band, they joined Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus and others on stage at the Grammys on Sunday for a mashup of the various versions of the mega hit "Old Town Road". In so doing they became the first K-pop act to ever perform on the awards show, though tellingly they STILL haven't been nominated for a Grammy despite all they've accomplished in 2019 nor did they appear in their own right performing their own music. That slight is symptomatic of a wider controversy which blew up last week, just days before the ceremony, when the now-former president and CEO of the Recording Academy Deborah Dugan released allegations of favoritism and corruption in the nomination process just after she was relieved of her duties for allegedly bullying an assistant.
Big Bang's first appearance in over 2 years and as a now-four member group will be at Coachella in April. The fate of former member Seungri is still to be resolved but at least he's not in jail (yet). Epik High will also be playing the festival.
