It was warm (record-breaking) and calm at Rainier Golf & Country Club. The rhododendrons were in full bloom.
I arrived a little past 10AM. The parking lot was, expectedly, not that full. Per my habit, I parked away in the far end from the other cars. I didn't see anybody except the groundskeepers even when I got to the players score postings hung behind the clubhouse. Even when I had enough after 5 hours, my car was parked alone. I remember the lot being full the last time I showed up a few years ago.
There a total of 50 entries posted with 8 players withdrawing by the time the second 18 was being played. About a tenth of the those were members of the UofW Huskies Women's Golf Team. When I arrived, all of the players were somewhere on the course.
My first time I pretty much stuck close to the clubhouse but this time around I went further around the course, almost to every hole. I have to remind you that the course is not too far North of SeaTac Airport so jetliners were constantly landing during play. They weren't too much of a distraction - for me anyways.
It turned out to be a tough course for the players. Lots of trees and bunkers which the players found plenty. Plus the fact most of the players level of talent meant little or no distance control. And sometimes direction control. I had one tee shot off a par 3 hop over me. Fortunately, I was trying to find the ball, heard the player shout "fore!" and cringed when her ball fell in front of me.
After 18 holes, only two players were under par: Idaho Vandal Sophie Hausmann of Germany with a 69 and local favorite Lauryn Nguyen of West Seattle with a 70. Lauryn is a frosh at West Seattle High School and only 15.
Youth was typical here but experience won out in the end as ancient Welsh woman Becky Morgan was the only one to shoot under par for the second 18 to finish -1 and a place in the US Women's Open. Hausmann finish a stroke back to get the second spot.
Lauryn blew up with an 82 but still finished 8th. One problem was hole 18. The shot off the tee is intimidating with tall trees lining the right-hand side. It was amazing how often I heard the knocking of wood. The threesome Lauryn was in all hit their tee shots right. The first had the "advantage" of her ball bouncing back to the middle off of a tree even though it rested short of the fairway. Yes, short. She could tear her second shot just short and left of the green. The second player had to punch her second back into the fairway but she managed to get it up and down from there for a par. Lauryn also had to punch out but her ball caught in the rough. Her third shot was short and in the bunker. Bogey.
The first player? She chipped in her third shot for a birdie.
Almost all of the players had a caddie to help. I counted only three players without one. Last time I remember it about half-and-half.
Besides Morgan, I only recognize the names of Naomi Ko due to this website. She was the ninth and last withdrawal. And Julianne Alvarez who helped the Huskies to the championship two seasons ago.

Solheim stars take back seat to budding mathematician in U.S. Open qualifying golfweek.com/2018/05/14/solheim-stars-take-back-seat-to-budding-mathematician-in-u-s-open-qualifying/
Linn Grant had more pressing matters on her mind as she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open. Thirty-six holes of golf at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club just north of London was a breeze compared to the 8 a.m. math exam the 18-year-old was due to sit the following morning.
Solheim Cup stars Catriona Matthew and Mel Reid had to take a back seat as the precocious teenager qualified with ease for the $5 million U.S. Women’s Open later this month at Shoal Creek, Ala.
Matthew finished seven shots back. Reid was nine shots off Grant’s pace, while Austria’s Sarah Schober took the fourth and final spot. She survived a five-way playoff with English players Sophie Walker and Rachael Goodall, Scotland’s Heather Macrae and Christine Wolf of Austria.
