Shut Up and Attack!
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Colin Cann was out walking the golf course, as he does most Mondays, when he first saw Sung Hyun Park hit driver.
“I stepped back and said ‘Holy cow,’ ” recalled Cann. “I deliberately took my time on this one hole because I wanted to see a little bit more.”
That was at the start of the 2015 KEB Hana Bank Championship and three days later, Park posted a course-record 10-under 62. Cann, a longtime looper for Paula Creamer who also worked for Se Ri Pak and Annika Sorenstam, calls his new boss the most impressive player he’s ever seen off the tee.
Heady stuff, but not likely an exaggeration.
Back in South Korea, where Park dominated the Korean LPGA, she has a couple nicknames: “Namdalla,” which translates to “I am different” and “Dan Gong,” which means “Shut up and attack!”
What does Park think of the latter?
“Not bad,” she said, smiling.
Here in America, some around the LPGA refer to her as “Tiger Woods.”
In addition to a head-turning swing that’s as beautiful as it is powerful, Park has an unforgettable game face. LPGA Hall of Famer Inbee Park (no relation) carries the same expression regardless of how she’s playing. Sung Hyun Park is that way too, only she looks like she’s headed to a gunfight.
“When I go back home and see the TV and my face, I don’t know why I got too serious,” Park said through her U.S. manager, Annie Lee, who travels with her and sometimes acts as interpreter. (Park’s mother also tours with her, but dad stays back in South Korea.)
“Maybe some people will think that my face doesn’t look comfortable, but it’s because I‘m just focusing on my play.”
Park, 23, moved to Orlando, Fla., over the winter for two months of training. She would’ve loved to work on her English during that time, but 10 hours on the golf course and an hour of gym work left time for little else. She can understand most questions, but 90 percent of the time uses an interpreter to answer them.
Park enters this week’s ANA Inspiration ranked 12th in the world. While she’s considered among the favorites at the year’s first major, it’s a long list given the fine form of about eight players.
She finished tied for sixth in her debut at Missions Hills last year but had lukewarm thoughts on the desert track given how often she found the rough.
When asked if Dinah’s course suited her, Park said “not that much.”
Park worked on her short game with Brian Mogg four times in Orlando on the advice of Pak. She hadn’t worked with a formal instructor for three years prior to that, and while it went well, said she wouldn’t potentially return to Mogg until the season ends.
Park’s goals for the year are straightforward: She wants to win and be named the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year.
Cann met up with Park in Singapore for her start to the year at the HSBC Women’s Champions, the fourth event on the LPGA’s 2017 schedule. Her results thus far: third, T-13, T-4.
Cann believes the most important thing Park can do is not put too much pressure on herself.
“She finished third in Singapore and everyone is saying ‘Oh, well, she didn’t win,’ ” Cann said.
Not yet, anyway.
