My first of three stops for the day was Galloway National Golf Club at 7 AM. Twenty-eight groups would be teeing off at #1 or #10 starting at 7:30 AM.
Maria Hernandez was out on the range...her warm-up included putting down three balls and hitting them with a continuous back-and-forth sweeping of a hybrid.
Another pro on the range was a name from the distant past, Karen Noble. She was on the USA side when I attended the final day matches of the 1990 Curtis Cup at Somerset Hills CC in NJ. She was NJ’s top woman amateur and was getting instruction on-site from the state’s most high profile coach, David Glenz. However, her pro career just fizzled...she quit touring after a few years and became teaching pro.
Only a few familiar faces were here...Kendall Dye, who I videoed the day before...Kim Williams, who I saw at a 2009 USWO qualifier...and LPGA veteran Heather Bowie-Young, who was not on my tee sheet (maybe she was a sub).
I took a peak at the bag of Blair O’Neal – Cobra Fly-Z irons & Cobra Tour Trusty wedges. As for the lady, I was not blown away by her appearance, although her stretching routine using two golf clubs was quite impressive. She hammered a good drive at #10 at 8 AM.
The 8:20 AM tee time at #10 had a player I had seen before, Seema Sadekar. She was definitely a candidate for most fashionable pro...wore a navy blue short-sleeve and short-hem one piece with navy blue & gold saddle shoes, and a gold veisor with navy blue Titleist script.
The last player I watched at #10 was Shasta Averyhardt. I had heard of her name before, but didn’t know she was a head-turning 6-1 Amazon. She mashed her drive, which I recorded.
Before leaving at 9 AM, I made a brief tour of the pro shop. I spotted that Callaway 21-degree utility iron again. Their price was even more insane compared to the Seaview - $260!
I returned to the Seaview around 9:30 AM; the morning groups had already teed off. Many players were on the main practice green, including Q Baek. She was wearing a bucket hat over her baseball cap, which isn’t a bad idea on a sunny day. She was also moving around the green with the mobility of a nursing home patient...as if she were battling a leg injury or a sore back. Her bag included a Srixon Z UT45, a bulked-up utility iron with a strip of lead tape on the back. Later, Heather Bowie-Young showed up...maybe they didn’t need her at Galloway after all.
I passed a couple of equipment trailers on the way to the driving range. The big trailer was TaylorMade; the smaller trailer next to it had an LPGA logo, along with three or four brand logos...I assume this was used by everyone else.
Jenny Suh passed me on the way to the practice bunkers...soon afterward, Mr. TaylorMade was on his cell phone calmly asking, “Did I order irons for Jenny Suh to be sent to Atlantic City?”
Not much new at the range today, so I headed for the Bay Course to complete my video collection. I couldn’t pass up Michelle Wie as she was exiting the 12th green for the 13th tee. Daddy did not follow her...walked up the 13th fairway carrying a yardage book stuffed with papers. I assume he has yardages from the rough because her ball went right.
The 9th tee box was nearby, so I took my next three videos there: Sun Young Yoo, Laura Davies, and Caroline Masson. Yoo had a metal badge attached to her bag that said Dove Canyon CC, which is in Orange County California.
Davies had a Lynx bag that said Boom Boom 2. I didn’t know Lynx was still in business. While Laura waited to hit, she waived to Stacy Lewis’ caddie over on the 12th fairway and walked over to talk to him. Don’t know what it was about, but they hugged when they were done. Laura’s caddie is a British or Aussie girl and said, “Many, many years ago, I qualified for the USWO and he was my caddie.”
I returned briefly to #13 to get Brooke Pancake’s drive, then started walking towards #1. My last video was Na Yeon Choi at the 6th tee. She played with four Korean middle-aged men. One of them wore a Hazzy outfit, which is NYC’s brand.
I observed the drives of Sydnee Michaels Muncrief (that’s what it says on her bag) and Hana Jang (Mr. Honma was a spectator) on the way to the shuttle pick-up area.
My next stop was as a walk-on at a golf course in Tuckerton. Almost didn’t work out...they had a sign there saying, “Course closed for tournament.” Ugh...but they said if I get my stuff together in five minutes, they’d send me out to the first hole before the tourney groups arrived from the ninth green. Woo-hoo, mission accomplished!
