Good Ruling handed down by the USGA. The Amateur Rules can be so difficult to completely understand. She admitted that she made a mistake and apologized for it.

Total Joke. It couldn't have been a more clear violation than this. Will they knock her if she shows up at the next amateur event wearing an Apple Watch? Betcha they don't.

How are you going to tell a 16 year old that appeared in an unpaid ad once and apologized that they have to turn pro?
A minor is dependent upon guidance from adults who in this case led her astray, but she alone would have to bare the full brunt of losing her Amateur career.
I think the USGA made the right decision to issue a warning. I get why people are upset but the punishment wouldn’t have fit the crime for a teenager’s only offense.

donWell said, can't agree more. No reason to make a mountain out of molehill; the incidence as it's is already a good training manual for all amateurs. I won't be upset a bit even if Lucy turns pro and signs a sponsor contract with Apple right after ANWA.

I should probably read the rule book this century to get a better idea about the letter and intent of the rule.

donIn a democratic society; rules always incite debates and arguments. USGA and the R&A announced 2019 new rules of golf; and there have been never stopping discussions. At the end of the day, democracy is better than totalitarianism.

I guess if at the next tournament she wants to sign for a better score than she made, we'll let her do that, too? She's just a kid, how can she be held responsible for following the rules? Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Let's face it, if she were the 100th ranked amateur, she would not have gotten away with it. When you have different rules for different players, you may as well have no rules at all.

the usga should go after apple with a substantial monetary penalty, they obviously knew she was an amateur... by making the company pay a significant amt in fines, likely will not see this problem occur in the future.

jlpgafan Good idea; may be USGA won't win anything but it's a good symbolic gesture. One caveat; Apple is probably already a substantial benefactor of USGA.

When you have different rules for different players, you may as well have no rules at all. Happy, I can see why you think favoritism comes into it. It may be naive on my part to think otherwise but I would have to know more about the cases the USGA considers every year. Warnings might be more common than we know because it’s not a famous player so it’s not in the news at all.. (I’d also understand if the USGA handed down a suspension instead.) You’re right that the rule is explicit and she broke it. Her defense is essentially ignorance. At the same time people don’t live their lives with the USGA handbook in their pocket. What people know is that you’re not supposed to get paid. If anybody could plead ignorance to the letter of the rules it would have to be a teenager. You could argue that they knew this was breaking a rule and proceeded anyway. I haven’t seen evidence to support that (Nike outfits were a little damning, too). But I take Lucy at her word that she had no intention of doing something that may have seriously jeopardized her amateur career. I could be persuaded that the better course of action would be a zero tolerance policy by the USGA, for the betterment of everybody, but I’m not involved to the extent that I would have a strong opinion on that. I’d think I’d prefer the governing bodies take everything into account, in this case her age, and try to make the punishment fit the crime. I appreciated reading your thoughts.

In their lengthy and somewhat overwrought official statement, the USGA said Absent any examples of other players in similar cirumstances who lost their status, I'd take them at their word.
I thought it was interesting that the USGA said that their investigation determined that no compensation was given to Lucy for the ad now or in the future. But there was no mention of whether there was an agreement for Apple to sponsor Lucy once she turns pro. I wouldn't be surprised if there was...and that that was the reason for the NDA.
Of course, by then the Apple watch may be relegated to the dustbin of history...

Geoff is some kind of golf reactionary...i.e., we gotta start playing sh***y golf balls again to honor the courses of Tillinghast, Ross, etc., and all amateurs must look destitute.
