I just read what Randal Mel wrote. I now understand the Rules, I think.

Rule 6:2 states “even if no payment or compensation is received, an amateur golfer is deemed to receive a personal benefit by promoting, advertising or selling anything, or allowing his name or likeness to be used by a third party for the promotion, advertisement or sale of anything.”
They all get free clubs and clothes that are fully branded. They wear college gear before they are on the team. I don't see how appearing in a commercial, unpaid, is different enough from what currently goes on.

I guess the only difference is that a video ad for Apple (paid or not) is so in-your-face...and throw in the Non-Disclosure Agreement...who do they think they are? I predict the USGA will take the Li family word that no money was passed, drop the issue and tell them to sin no more.
As for the free gear and duds given to amateurs, good for them, golf is an expensive sport and they should get as much free swag as possible.

The implication is that they will sign a contract with the clothing or club maker eventually. Bryson went with full Colbra at major pro events as an Amateur before officially signing with them. What Lucy did seems akin to that.

The cost of the equipment is probably low enough to be technically legal. But I think the point is, in one case you have equipment that is being used by players to help make them better. Yes, it might be done in order to get them to sign later, but heck, I've gotten freebies from golf stores before, too. It's a common promotional technique. Try before you buy.
It would be different if the golf companies were putting ads up with those amateur golfers. They clearly would do that to sell the product to third parties (ie, us) (and to also promote the player for possible future marketing opportunities). IMO It's even worse in the case of Apple. Nobody on the course or on TV watching Lucy Li sees her wearing an Apple Watch. The only reason you know she is using one is because of the ad.
The photo of her as a 4-year-old -- was she even playing golf then? I can't see how that makes any difference to the conversation.

OK, she's guilty. I'd rather she turned pro now anyway.

Eubanks is so right. The USGA has been forced into a no-win situation.
She should turn pro for herself. Why should anybody perform volunteer work for the world's wealthiest company. That's just plain stupid. Don't tell me this was just some offhand appearance in some commercial. She is the star of this one. It involves multiple shoots in multiple locations. Hair, makeup, wardrobe. All that is work, and it is not exactly easy work. I don't even particularly care for Lucy Li but the thought of Apple getting all this for free still makes me mad. Then again being realistic, I suppose I have to consider the possibility that maybe people are simply LYING here, and nobody is actually out there doing volunteer work for the world's wealthiest company.

I love Shack but he's done zippo for women's golf coverage. Bums me out thinking about it.

donIt's obvious that Geoff is a taker, not a giver. He's basically one of the biggest con artists; I stopped reading him a long while ago.

Would you all agree that if Li turns pro she should NOT be given a special exemption to allow her to try to qualify for the LPGA (or KLPGA or JLPGA, but I don't think she will try that)? It would really suck if they reward someone for breaking the rules. She should have to wait until she's 18 before becoming eligible (does the JLPGA have an age limit of 18? The KLPGA and LPGA do).
