The Korean press is reporting that Jin Young Ko has clinched the Rookie of the Year award. Is this true? According to this article, Georgia Hall, Ko's nearest challenger, plans on only playing CME. She needs at least two wins to catch Ko, so if this is true, Hall cannot become ROY. Third place Yu Liu would need more than four wins to catch Ko, and there are only four events left. So, it looks like Jin Young has done it! Technically, we need to wait two more events, after which Hall would not be able to win it no matter what. But given what we know, it seems Jin Young Ko will be this year's ROY. Congrats!

It leaves me scratching my head as to why Hall has skipped the last three events. . .she seemed at one time to embrace the challenge of catching Jin Young but then returned home while her UL team mates have remained in Asia and attended most events. . .but happy for Jin Young whose had a tough go of it at times emotionally but all in all has been one of the most consistent of the Sisters. . . Jin Young saying "You mean I've clinched Rookie of the Year, wowser, time for ice cream". . . Jin Young celebrating her ROY clinching in Taiwan. . .This girl loves ice cream. . .

By my math, Hall would need to play the three remaining events and win at least two of them to have any chance of catching Ko. Is it possible for her to change her mind and enter Toto? If not, if the entry deadline has passed, then yeah, Jin Young is definitively the ROY. Until that date, I have to consider it an asterisk (although it's a virtual certainty to be sure, even if Hall does enter all three events).

Impressive considering Hall won a major and is now ranked 7th in the world. In a world without a KLPGA, Hall wins easily on the strength of an outstanding rookie season. But for the fourth straight year, the LPGA Rookie of the Year is a KLPGA graduate. I am beginning to sense a trend here.

I believe Lucky 6 is good enough to continue that trend. . .then Hye Jin Choi. . . Competition will be tough if Kristen Gillman is in the equation. . .

Now the argument could become: does she deserve it, or did Hall and her Major win have the more impressive season? Of course, you know I will stick up for Jin Young. My argument would be, not only was Ko a lot more consistent, but she also won a national championship as her sole win, the Aussie Open. Yes, it isn't a Major, but I would still call that an impressive way to start your rookie season (did I mention that Jin Young was the first rookie to ever win her first tournament as a member? Yes, except for the LPGA's first year when everyone was a rookie, of course). And she's still in the running for the Vare. If she pulls that off, she would become only the third rookie to ever win that award (after Nancy Lopez and In Gee). So yeah, I think she deserved it.

She knew that she wasn't going to catch Jin Young. Because Jin Young would also be playing those tournaments. As I stated before, was the only question would be how much would she win by.
