A quote from the NYT article: The change may also persuade more female college golfers to remain in school, since there is a new title to chase. Those golfers might find their parents enthusiastically backing a decision to remain on campus, because mom and dad probably long for the chance to get inside the gates at Augusta National, too.I don't think this writer knows much about the women's golf scene...with a few exceptions, the four-year college players stayed in school four years because they knew they couldn't cut it in the pros any sooner...or at all. I like Dan Jenkins' reaction...must have talking about Korea: A women's amateur tournament will play a final round at Augusta National next year. I didn’t know there were any women amateurs left.

Luci Li will be 16 next year when ANWAC comes around; she could play 2 years if she's qualified. Lucy Li's star is aligned with publicity; she won DCP at Augusta and qualified for USWO when she's 11. She paired with Michelle Wie at ANA when she's 14. And now this. Lucy Li is more well known to American general public than all but a handful of LPGA players. She could become a real star if she wins ANWAC next year. But Lucy isn't alone. She'll face strong competition from Rose Zhang, Angelina Ye, Attahya Thitikul and Amari Avery. https://www.instagram.com/p/BhPXqEWgA_o

A continuation of my Perfect World scenario:
This new tournament will be a big hit, thanks to the media fawning over everything related to ANGC. After a couple of years down the road, Whan will call Ridley and say, "Hey, when the LPGA's deal with ANA expires after 2022, we think it'll be time to replace it with a Ladies Masters tournament the week after The Masters. Your amateur winner can get an invite into the new pro tournament. We'll be the heroes of the golf world!"
As for the current ANA Inspiration, either scrap it after 2022 or "de-majorize" it with a new sponsor....and bounce it around various Palm Springs golf courses...I've had enough of Poppy's Pond.

philknj I don't know what future will hold but these are things I'm sure: 1. ANWAC will be the most watched women's golf on American TV 3. ANWAC will attract the biggest media presence of any women's golf events in the US 3, ANWAC will be very well attended; although Augusta National may put a hard limit on the patrons It's everything people want for a women's golf tournament. As a reference, WRX already has 3,942 posts and 125,257 views on Masters main thread; in addition, there are other thirty or forty Masters related threads.

Hmmm..... Not sure about that. The drive, chip and putt thing is shown off hours on the Golf Channel, not on network TV. The amateur event is in the ghetto of Saturday, two days before most of the media wants to arrive at Augusta. It will doubtless also only be televised on Golf Channel, a niche channel. It features none of the familiar stars people want to see, plus it's women's golf, which a lot of people who watch the Masters are not interested in. It doesn't even have the "cute factor" the Drive, chip and putt has. And on top of that, a lot of the fans of women's golf will still be mostly paying attention to the ANA. Remember: this is not the Masters. To imply it will receive viewership numbers like the actual tournament seems wildly optimistic.

The U.S. Women's Amateur will continue to have a better field and will be ten times harder to win. Nevertheless, this new tournament will garner way more buzz than it deserves...which is the first step towards making my fantasy a reality in 2023.

Only in the USA is the Solheim most watched. It has not made more US corporations want to sponsor LPGA tournaments. Look who is sponsoring new tournaments. Why would the Asian Amateurs spend money to travel to a tournament. That only people in the USA care about.

Remember: this is not the Masters. To imply it will receive viewership numbers like the actual tournament seems wildly optimistic. I think the only thing that is a given is that the event will be very well attended. A huge part of the draw to attend the Masters is to walk the course. With tickets so hard to get to the Masters, people will jump at the chance to get on the grounds - probably not come from all over the world for it, but if you’re anywhere in the Southeast, yes. Re TV - I’d be pretty surprised if it had a huge viewership. There will be interest to see how the girls do vs the men, but it’s not like there will be many -any?- “names” to follow. I think there’s a chance for the ANA to gain some eyeballs if this new thing precedes it on the GChannel. If the GCh.can bring itself to promote the ANA “coming next” and play up the amateurs followed by the pros it could be a good thing.

cannlinnyAJGA (American Junior Golf Association) and NCAA women's golf will be the biggest beneficiaries of this event. More attention, more eyeballs will be on them; Lucy Li probably won't be the only name known to the general public next year.

Only in the USA is the Solheim most watched. Bingo. Guarantee you that if you include Asian rating numbers, no way in Hades Solheim is the most watched golf event. I would guess it would be the Olympics just from Korean numbers alone (1/4 of the country watched Inbee win the gold live at 1:30 AM local time). And come on, no way will the Augusta tournament have a better field than the Solheim. It will be impressive if five of the women competing next year at Augusta have anything like a professional golf career on a major tour in their future. Every single player at the Solheim will be in the top 500 in the world, and a few will be top 20.

HappyFan The minimum purse of a PGA tournament is $6,200,000, compare to $1.300,000 for LPGA. PGA didn't grow their purses by relying on foreign companies as sponsors. Women are as good as men; but their purses are artificially low by a factor of 5. Women can't grow their purses unless Americans love to watch them play; and American companies line up to sponsor their tournaments.
