Didn't know this. In 1972 when the offer was made...Whistler was basically a nothing town with minimal infrastructure....the Sea to Sky highway must have been crap too....in good traffic nowadays with a rebuilt highway...it's still 90 minutes from downtown Vancouver and 2+ hours from the airport. That reminds me...have you seen "The Groundstar Conspiracy" (1972) ? Most of it was filmed in the B.C. area. Youtube has it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjZLTQUxYdwThx. They showed some of English Bay...EB & The West End are Gay Central...annual summer fireworks and Pride parade locations. They also showed a lot of Simon Fraser University. And the 2nd Narrows/Iron Worker's Memorial bridge too....I use it often...there's always a F****** accident or 2 on it each day...ugh....can be very stressful when I need to make a tee time.

OK...who is the young Korean lady in pantyhose and knee highs singing "Imagine"? I presume you meant the younger of the two ladies, in which case you're referring to Ahn Ji Young of the female K-pop duo Bolbbalgan4.
There were some interesting choices of music as the teams came out onto the floor of the stadium. The Americans marched with PSY's "Gangnam Style" playing in the background, sort of reminding casual fans of the genre of that once-in-a-lifetime viral hook. The Brits and Aussies, who were grouped back to back, were greeted by Twice's "Likey", while Team Canada got the classic 2012 hit "Fantastic Baby" from Big Bang. Towards the end of the parade the biggest hit of 2017, BTS' "DNA", also got pumped over the sound system.Kevin My family LOLed when they were playing Gangnam Style as the Americans walked out. That can't have been a coincidence, as it is by far the most well known Korean song on this side of the pond. It also seemed like a ten minute long extended mix that went on and on (kudos to those dancers in the center of the ring; they must have jammed along for more than an hour while the nations came out). Another fun challenge for me was figuring out the alphabetical order of the nations. Since I know hangul, but don't know the Korean word for every country, I was able to figure out maybe 90% of the reasons why countries appeared where they did (most are just literally Koreanizations of the English name of the country, like Puh-ran-zuh (France) or Bet-ah-nam (Vietnam). But some, like Britain (yongguk), China (choongguk) and USA (miguk) have actual Korean names. Germany (Tawkil) is another unusual one. The highlight for me was the drones that formed the shapes in the sky. Really cool. Korean opera singer had the most beautiful hanbok I have ever seen. Yuna Kim stole the show as usual, although that ice rink had no fencing and was really high up, which seemed really dangerous! I hope they let her skate in the gala after the skating competition is over. https://www.instagram.com/p/BfEPCAcFSD_ And of course Inbee! Fricking Katie Couric didn't shut up for three straight hours, and when Inbee comes out she's blabbing about some torch bearer from twenty years ago while missing the torch bearer right in front of her. Fortunately, Tirico, who covers golf sometimes, saved the day with a few pertinent facts about Inbee before the torch pass. And I swear, I don't think I've seen Inbee get so choked up before. Pity that Se Ri was virtually invisible. Again Tirico specifically mentioned her, but I'm still not sure which of the flag bearers she was, and I have hi def TV.

Tonight (Sunday) Chloe Kim starts her quest for a gold medal. Kim is a fascinating story. She is a prodigy at the half pipe, one of those stupid X Games sports I have no use for. But Kim is great at it, and though only 17, is already so accomplished at the sport that she actually qualified 4 years ago for Sochi, but was too young to be on the team (age limit is 15). Advertisers are lining up to hire her for commercials. The fact that she's a Korean American and might come out of these games as the biggest American star is pretty cool, so I'm rooting for her despite my normal aversion to these types of sports. And she seems to have a peppy So Cal personality, too, so that never hurts. Go Chloe! Chloe Kim Is Ready for Liftoff

I watched Opening Ceremony live and I was surprised that nobody on here mentioned Dumbo's appearance. Now I know why: NBC cut out the entire Olympic Torch Relay montage.

You haven't heard anything from alpine skiing yet for a reason: high winds forced the postponement of Sunday's men's downhill and today's women's giant slalom. The schedule has become a little compacted as a result and any further weather issues could make it extremely difficult to finish the entire program within the Olympic fortnight.
Going into tonight's game against Sweden the unified Korean women's hockey team has their work cut out for them after they got their heads handed to them by the Swiss in Saturday's opener despite a capacity crowd that included President Moon Jae-in, IOC President Thomas Bach and Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the first member of the ruling dynasty to set foot in the South since the end of the Korean War. While Kim Yong Nam (no relation) was the official head of the North Korean delegation, the media's attention had been focused on Kim Yo Jong, who delivered a handwritten letter from her brother to President Moon inviting the South Korean president to a summit meeting in Pyongyang at the earliest moment of mutual convenience. In the meantime US Vice President Mike Pence spent his time in PyeongChang hoping to counter whatever propaganda the North hoped to spread with their presence and reinforce the argument that pressure must continue to be applied to Kim Jong Un until he agrees to give up his weapons of mass destruction and return to the bargaining table. It also appeared at times that Pence and his team went out of their way to avoid any contact whatsoever with the North's delegation, even though they both attended the same diplomatic reception hosted by President Moon and were seated in uncomfortably close proximity to each other during the opening ceremony, although it must be said the North's delegation probably wasn't really interested in talking to him anyway.
An observation made by political commentator Joshua Cooper Ramo on NBC's tape-delayed presentation of the opening ceremony caused considerable controversy in the host nation. As the Japanese team marched into the stadium he said this: "...now representing Japan, a country which occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945. But every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural and technological and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation". NBC was forced to issue a public apology for the misguided comment and reassigned the person who uttered it.
Despite their lack of success elsewhere so far the host nation does have one medal so far. No surprise that it came from their short-track speed skaters, but Lim Hyo Jun was the unexpected winner of the men's 1500m race on Saturday in a new Olympic record.

Just watched the final period of the KOR/SWE women's hockey. Another 8-0 loss but it could have been a lot worse. Goalie So Yeon Shin had 86 saves in these first two games. She put up a valiant effort...it seemed like the entire game was played in front of her net.
The North Korean cheer squad was undeterred. They were leading the crowd in cheers 10 minutes after the game ended. This is from the first game...

It's interesting to see two prohibitive favorites gag their way off the medal stand. In Men's Luge, some German guy was going for gold medal #3, but clunked his way down the track to oblivion. In Men's Biathlon, a French guy was supposed to be The Man, but he missed three of his first five shots.
Regarding the biathlon, they said the location is a golf course in the summer. I looked it up...they are at Alpensia 700 Golf Club, part of the Alpensia resort. Here are some details on the golf from the resort website:
Par 72 6,659 yards It's a "replica" course that copied famous holes from around the world, including St. Andrews #12, Augusta #11-13, Sawgrass #17, Pine Valley #5, Pebble Beach #11, etc.
They just showed Women's Luge...a German chick wiped out, but she's okay. I wonder what would happen if you strapped a human-size/weight dummy to a luge and pushed it down the track...could it stay upright the whole way down?

They had DUMBO in a video montage and NBC cut it out!!!?? #NBCFail (this is a hilarious hashtag that resurfaces each Olympics to chronicle NBC's many failings at covering the Olympics). https://www.instagram.com/p/BdUppUJgaJE

More to the point, I wonder where the human sized dummy would finish in the standings. Imagine you trained for four years for luge and finished behind the crash test dummy?

https://www.instagram.com/p/BfGucadAJR3 Saw this last night and nearly jumped through the roof. Absolutely electrifying. And to think she got left off the Olympics four years ago for Wagner, and Wagner tried to finagle her way onto the team again this year.

On CBC...starting at 25:00....they talk about Winbee and show her entire torch carry....yes....Winbee was crying...she reached to wipe her face 3 times. You YANKS must be so proud of your ARROGANT EXCLUSION behavior...kudos!

But these healthy looking well fed young ladies pay a small price for their personal service vs. living a lifetime of working in a potato field for 1000 Won a day. CYBORG should ask if she can borrow these gals as her own personal Penguin fangirls when she joins the LPGA after she wins the Oz Open this week.

Back in 2000...we had a biz meeting in Banff...on our drive down to a Flames hockey game...we stopped off at the Olympic park....our group got to go down the bobsled track. Four of us climbed into a sled (no not a REAL bobsled)...the sides are high so you wouldn't break your neck...some staff just gave us a push head start...it was fun...our sled got up to 85 km/hr.....it was maybe $100 per head?...good thing none of us reached in our pocket. You can go down in a real bobsled manned by an expert....obviously more expensive. Whistler's bobsled is also open to the public. I need to get my sorry butt up there one year to watch the World Cup bobsled action.

Yup...last night was a BIG ONE FINGER SALUTE from Nagasu to Wagner....I can't stand Wagner...she's kinda like Paula Creamer....I laugh...it's pretty SAD/HUMOROUS that some members here actually FANBOY the PINK PHONY....it's EMBARRASSING.
