I like the Winter Olympics more than the Summer Olympics. Downhill skiing....bob sled & all the other sliding events, short track speed skating, moguls, snow boarding events, women's figure skating, etc, etc and of course hockey.

All the artsy stuff in the open ceremony was quite good...the teams filing into the stadium was boring. However, still photos don't really capture the spectacular production of passing the torch and lighting the flame. Then I thought of an amusing incident at the Montreal summer games in '76. But, before that, here's the primitive flame lighting ceremony they did: When the games started, the moved the cauldron-on-a-stick to a spot just inside or outside one corner of the oval running track. A few days later, they had rain and the flame went out. ABC Sports showed a video of some guy going up a step ladder and restarting the flame with a cig lighter!

I just learned this in Wikipedia:
Q: What location was first offered the '76 Winter games after Denver backed out as host?
A: I had assumed all along that Innsbruck, Austria was the first alternate (they had the games in '64) .... but, no, it was Whistler, BC ... however, they had a recent change in government and turned it down.

Seriously Phil...how do you remember this sh*t....I was 15 back then. Ya the athletes coming into the stadium is always so boring. The opening ceremonies were outstanding....hopefully I'm still above dirt in 20-30 years...I can't imagine how these ceremonies will look like. Our Olympic cauldron that's right in the heart of downtown...water and mountains in the background.

TRULY TRULY PATHETIC....Korea entering the stadium with a unified flag. I'm happy to hear the young generation of S. Korea thinks this unification is complete GARBAGE....#RESPECT I never saw that flag before...per Wikipedia, it's been around since 1991: "Used to represent the whole of Korea when North and South participate together in international sporting events."If I'm a South Korean athlete, no way am I leaving any valuables out in the open with North Koreans running around over there...just sayin'

Didn't know this. In 1972 when the offer was made...Whistler was basically a nothing town with minimal infrastructure....the Sea to Sky highway must have been crap too....in good traffic nowadays with a rebuilt highway...it's still 90 minutes from downtown Vancouver and 2+ hours from the airport. No surprise the left wing new government bailed. Whistler always gets a ton of snow...looks like minimal snow in Korea....looks like a lot of man made snow. In 2010...it was really warm...they had to truck snow in for the local events on Cypress Mtn...it's only 7 minutes to the entry to the start of the base of the mountain....another 8 minutes to drive up the mountain. It was warm and rainy the 1st week here and then really sunny and warm for the balance. The golf courses were in amazing shape....if you wore some Olympic clothes...you got a $5 discount to the muni's during the Olympics.

Korea ladies (athletes & entertainers) make Yank babies so they can escape to Merica...maybe some Canadian babies too.

OK...now that I saw Winbee carry the torch...I don't blame her for lying...she starting crying after she handed the torch off....even the Smiling Buddha shed a tear too. I would have rather seen Dumbo or the LOVELY HYP carry the torch...why?...why not.
No surprise Yuna Kim lit the cauldron.

OK...who is the young Korean lady in pantyhose and knee highs singing "Imagine"? I presume you meant the younger of the two ladies, in which case you're referring to Ahn Ji Young of the female K-pop duo Bolbbalgan4.
There were some interesting choices of music as the teams came out onto the floor of the stadium. The Americans marched with PSY's "Gangnam Style" playing in the background, sort of reminding casual fans of the genre of that once-in-a-lifetime viral hook. The Brits and Aussies, who were grouped back to back, were greeted by Twice's "Likey", while Team Canada got the classic 2012 hit "Fantastic Baby" from Big Bang. Towards the end of the parade the biggest hit of 2017, BTS' "DNA", also got pumped over the sound system.Kevin

The live video streaming of individual events on sites such as NBCOlympics.com appears to be utilizing the world feed with a different set of English commentators than you may be seeing on your television. I therefore shouldn't have been surprised to hear our old friend Peter Donegan calling speed skating.

That reminds me...have you seen "The Groundstar Conspiracy" (1972) ? Most of it was filmed in the B.C. area. Youtube has it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjZLTQUxYdw
