Based on the way HF phrased the question, you're exactly right. Here's the more relevant question: Would SH Park as #1 be good for the LPGA? My answer is hell no. What I meant is that, if a number one player comes from a given country, of course it's a good thing for that country. But, it also means that that player becomes the face of that country's golfers for the rest of the world. In that respect, I wonder about Park. It's one thing to be "different" if you just represent yourself. But when you are a figurehead for all the players from your country, you have more responsibility (at least I think so). I don't see Park as wanting that or being prepared to deal with it. And given the way she is, and the type of criticism often leveled at the Koreans, I don't think she's ideally suited. That's not a knock on her. That's my theory about how players who become #1 are treated if they don't fit the proper template. As for the LPGA, that's a different question. I find it hard to imagine them wholeheartedly embracing her. Or even halfheartedly. It appears that Korean fans have no trouble embracing Sung Hyun Park, but as the face of Korean golf she does seem to reinforce the stereotypes that other golfers have recently done much to erase.

Huh? Are you saying the first 221 are indecent persons? Yani did nothing for me as a world #1, although I'll concede that she's a good interview. Do you know that she bought Annika's old house? To actually respond to the topic I think as long as when Sung Hyun does say something it’s interesting that’s better than having a jock who never says anything worth hearing even tho they talk and post on social all the time. We hear you, don. Don't even think about becoming No. 1, Lexi; we want don to stay as witty as ever.

Being No. 1 player certainly would be the face of Korean golf outside of Korea; but not necessarily in Korea. As we've found out last week.

I actually think Dustin Johnson has got to be a lot sharper than ppl give him credit for but he's an example of a boring jock #1. Rory was great. Jordan, pretty good, too.

Coincidentally, I'm glad a SHP thread was started cause I was gonna start one. Driving back from golf yesterday....I finally realized why Korean women LUV Namdalla....Korean women all LUV the LONG BALL.
Having played golf with enough Korean ladies here in Asia Central...and I think the LA guys can verify this too because there are many Korean golfers there in LA......Korean women LUV the LONG BALL and get really TURNED ON when they see it...that's why the scream in ECSTASY every time TERMINATOR smokes a ball.
Koreans only like to play golf among themselves. If I'm out as a single and ask to join up with some Koreans (Koreans flood the courses here)....they always say no and suggest I go out on my own. It's always the women who make and communicate the excuses not to play (the husbands cower in silence) because the wives love seeing the LONG BALL of others and this only creates issues for their SHORT BALL hitting husbands...don't believe me....go out to a course where many Koreans frequent and find out for yourself.

I'm not so sure, however, that Park would be a good #1 for the Koreans. Whoever the top golfer is will become in some ways the representative for the entire Korean squad. I have nothing against Park, but the criticisms of the Koreans (by westerners) are that they are not friendly to fans, are unemotional, and don't speak English. Park seems to tick all those marks (note that I don't know if she is actually unfriendly, just that her frowning face gives off that impression most of the time). It's true that Inbee Park, for instance, is known for being unemotional, but she also speaks fluent English. So Yeon Ryu, meanwhile, seems to have just about everything you could want in a top player. She's very friendly, has tons of personality, really knows how to present herself on a course (one of the best dressers out there), speaks great English, and is also quite good looking. Park seems to need to learn how to comport herself in the sort of non-course appearances she would have to make if she gets to be the best player. When she shows up for important galas in her pants and dorky shoes, it seems like she never got the memo about what is expected. When she poses for stupid promo photos as is often required, she often seems to be (barely) going through the motions; she seems more irritated by these sorts of things than, say, In Gee Chun does. Now, this is not to say that Park couldn't learn all this stuff, but she doesn't seem comfortable with it NOW. What do you guys think? Is this too unfair to her? Or am I just preparing everyone for the criticism that is sure to come her way? The general Yank fans are never gonna like any Korean (including Dumbo)...all they want is white skin, blonde hair and red, white and blue. It's no different than your fawning over any Korean player....if for some reason all Korean female golfers disappeared.... you'd stop watching golf....whereas many others (including members on this site) would continue watching women's golf cause they just want to watch good golf no matter the nationality. As far as the Koreans fans are concerned....they all love Namdalla. I have yet to see TERMINATOR play in person...so I don't know if she's fan friendly or not. I see Namdalla as a long hitting NYC.....kinda aloof, unemotional, her English wasn't great when she 1st appeared on tour, dresses poorly, etc, etc....but all kinds of fans LUV NYC...whether they are Koreans or the many RICE KINGS. I LUV how TERMINATOR SNUBS everyone and anything....golf is an individual sport and all she cares about is herself...Eldrick is also a SELFISH PR*CK and look at how people continue to DROOL over him and think he'll DOMINATE again...even though he can't get out of bed without some aid.

On a related thought I had mixed feelings about In Gee this week. I adore and idolize In Gee Chun but I sometimes get this feeling like she--albeit in her own quiet and graceful way--grasps too much for attention and admiration, to the point where it saps some of her energy. In Gee derived energy from her fans; not the other way around. She didn't win because other players played better; not because of her fans. There's nothing better than FANBOYING Dumbo at an event...it's so much fun...and Dumbo LUVS all the attention and feeds off of it. Hell .....she even initiated a HIGH FIVE with the Smiling Buddha after a birdie at Sahalee. LUV Dumbo!

The thing I like about Sung Hyun is she's legit fun for real golf fans to watch. I don't just mean the driver either, she tries to hit full swing flop shots around the greens.

Funny you should post this...I just finished watching my Hana recording and seeing Namdalla trying to do a FIGJAM flop from behind the 18th green.

You'd be better off after an event on Sunday to BEG Lexi to autograph and give you her shoes...Lexi has big feet so you could probably where them...Dumbo has big feet too.
